We often forget about ourselves because of how hectic our lives have become. So many things need to be accomplished each day and there never seems to be enough time to do it all. Eventually you find yourself working later and later. Then you start putting in time on the weekends. Eventually you are at work more than you are at home. Your business has become your life.

It doesn’t need to be this way though. Not if you lay down some ground rules for yourself. If you have a family they will appreciate having you home. You can’t neglect the rest of your life just because of your responsibilities as a small business owner. You have a responsibility to yourself and the other people in your life. That is something you should never forget no matter how hectic your working life become.

So what kind of ground rules do you need? Well for starters the number of hours you put in at work need to be set. Now we know a forty hour work week is not going to be a reality but you can try to limit yourself to something less than seventy or eighty hours. Try to set yourself a time that you need to be out of the office and on your way home each night. If you have a family try to make it a point to be home in time to have dinner with them. If you need to put some time in on the weekend make sure to limit yourself. If you have to go do it early then leave by noon. Get out and do things. Enjoy your weekend. Your business will still be there Monday morning.

So what if you are the kind of person that takes your work home with you. Well that is a decision for you to make. But you need to ask yourself whether it would be more productive for you to take it home or could it possibly wait until tomorrow. More times than not it can wait until the next day and then you can give the task the attention it needs. Home is full of distractions. And when you are at home you need to be doing other things. Even if you don’t have a family to go home to you need to take the time to give yourself a mental break.

Everyone needs to take time out from what you do. If not you are going to burn yourself out. And that will not be good for you or your company. Regularly taking a break is good for you both mentally and physically. Too many people work themselves into the ground. You don’t want to be that type of person.

What else can you do to have a life outside of your work? Take a vacation! People that run their own businesses go years without finding the time to go on vacation. Occasionally we need to get away from it all if you ever want to be able to recharge your batteries. Yes it can be a hard thing to do. You either have to shut things down for a few days or trust someone else to hold down the fort while you are gone. Whatever it takes everyone needs to take a few days off. Not just a few hours or a couple of days. You need a real vacation. A week in a land of paradise is preferable.

Remember that taking care of yourself is not just good for you it can be good for your company and even the people that work for you. Not to mention your family if you have one to go home to. Everyone needs time to themselves and time to spend with others besides those you work with. So no matter what you do not want your business to become your life!

8 Tips to Improve Time Management

Are you the person that can never get anything done? Do you feel like your work day is always moving faster than you can? Or are you the eternal procrastinator? Whatever the reason, there’s never seems to be enough time in the day to get everything done. But, here’s the good thing. There’s tons of things you can do to improve your efficiency and gain back some of that lost time. Let’s take a look at eight solid things you can do today to improve your work and time efficiency.

Just like they say at AA, the first step is to acknowledge that you have a problem. So, knowing that you have a time management problem and accepting it is the first step to improving it. So stop denying it and accept it.

The second step is to decide. You need to decide that you’re going to do something about your time management. You can know you have a problem, and you can acknowledge that you have a problem, but until you decide that you’re going to do something about it nothing else matters. Once you decide that you have a time management problem, you can move forward. Save yourself some goals that you can achieve. And in the same way that someone tries to lose weight, make sure the goals are actually achievable. Create some success but you can build on.

Number three, stick to your goals. The reason that you create a goal is so that you have something to hold yourself accountable to. If you can’t secure goals, and you’re not going to achieve anything. That’s why it’s so important to create goals that are achievable. Once you achieve those initial goals, you can raise the bar again and continue to strive to get better, and better. You also have to have a stick to it might set, you have to make sure you don’t give up.

The fourth step is to create daily task lists. Creating a to do list for yourself is an easy way to properly manage your time. In fact, it is one of the easiest approaches that you can take. Outline what you need to do throughout the day. Be sure to list your tasks in order of importance. Every time you accomplish something, cross it off of the task list. Not only will this give you a sense of accomplishment, but you can see how you’re getting things done during the day. At the end of the day create the new list for the next day. At the end of the week, create the new list for the next week.

Use time management tools. Properly managing your time is important, but it can be hard for many individuals to get use to, especially right away. If you are one of those individuals, you will want to consider using time management tools to your advantage. But make sure that the time management tools don’t become time wasters. Your PDA, or your scheduler, should be used quickly and efficiently. Don’t spend minutes and hours just messing around and tooling with it.

Learn to say no. In all honesty, there are times where you may not be able to refuse a project at work or a task at home, but try to not take on more than you can accomplish. If you must, look into using outside help. In the home, this outside help can come from a housecleaner. At the workplace, this outside help can come from a coworker. Remember, there is a nice way and a rude way to say no. But at the end of the day if you are the one that says yes all the time, you never get anything done for yourself.

Get organized. Organization is key to being able to properly manage your time. If you are unorganized, you are likely to waste a large amount of time. For example, in the workplace you can waste time by searching for lost or misplaced documents. The same can be said for the home; if you are unorganized, you can spend hours searching for your glasses or car keys. Look at your desk, lift your computer, and ligature filing system. If things are all over the place, you will have a hard time finding them and you will waste time. Take a few minutes at the end of every day to put things back where they belong to you can start your next day fresh.

Get a coach. Or get help. If you have that much to do, and you’re super busy, it may make sense to hire someone to help keep you organized like an assistant, or if you’re just having a really hard time keeping to your plan, a coach can help keep you accountable.

The Great British Time Squeeze

The United Kingdom has embraced the return of the ‘long hours culture’. Over 3 million people have begun working over a 48 hour week. The number of people working long hours increased at a faster rate over the last year than the decline in excessive working between 1998 and 2006. The recent increase in working hours could be the result of the challenging economic climate, which has made employers more reluctant to recruit new staff, leading to existing employees having to work harder.

After slow but steady progress over the last decade, long working hours are making their way back into Britain’s workplaces. Employees across the UK already work the longest hours in Western Europe with the least amount of public holidays. The recent increase will mean lower productivity, more stress and less time to have a life outside the office with friends and family.

This is supported by a recent survey commissioned by Beefeater Restaurants, which reveals that 70.6% of Britons don’t feel they have a positive work/life balance. Work-life balance is achieved when an individual’s right to a fulfilled life inside and outside paid work is accepted and respected as the norm, to the mutual benefit of the individual, business and society. The survey, carried out by NEMS Market Research, shows that, as a nation, Britons don’t feel they spend enough time with their families and friends. The results reveal that, even in a culture which claims to prioritise a healthy work/life balance, British companies are falling short in their efforts.

A third (33.1%) of full-time workers surveyed didn’t feel they spent enough time with their family and friends and cited a busy job and work pressure (83.8%) as the main obstacle. When questioned on the impact this had on their lives, more than a third of full-time workers (34.6%) felt that life was passing them by without enjoyment.

Working long hours also comes with a health warning. There is sufficient evidence for us to be concerned about the potentially negative effects of working long hours on physical health. The strongest evidence probably concerns the links with cardiovascular disorder.

Stress is often the outcome of a work/life imbalance. According to a survey conducted by the National Life Insurance Co., four out of ten employees state that their jobs are ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressful. It is clear that problems caused by stress have become a major concern to both employers and employees.

Symptoms of stress are manifested both physiologically and psychologically. Persistent stress can result in cardiovascular disease, sexual health problems, a weaker immune system and frequent headaches, stiff muscles, or backache. It can also result in poor coping skills, irritability, jumpiness, insecurity, exhaustion, and difficulty concentrating. Stress may also perpetuate or lead to binge eating, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

A survey conducted by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank found that 44 per cent of workers in the United Kingdom take off fewer days of holiday than they are entitled to. Furthermore, 77 per cent admitted to keeping in touch with work, via email for example, while they are on holiday trying to relax.

One way of improving employees work/life balance is to ensure that they are able to use all of their holiday allocation effectively throughout the year. If employees were to take holidays throughout the year then it is suggested that employers would reap the benefits of increased productivity, improved recruitment and retention, lower rates of absenteeism, plus a more motivated, satisfied and equitable workforce.

Get More Done While Working Less

Technology today makes it possible to easily connect to your work computer from anywhere over the internet. Smart phones make it easy to send and receive email from just about anywhere. And of course, having that cell phone makes it possible to reach, or be reached by, anyone, anytime of day or night.

All this technology should make us more productive, but in many cases it can lead to less productivity. In the old days you went to work for 8-10 hours a day, then went home to rest up for the next day in the trenches. Maybe now and then you took some paperwork home, but you really couldn’t do much away from the office. You had time to clear your head, and relax.

Now though, when you head home after a long day you don’t rest. You log on, and try to get more work done. This just means the job follows you everywhere, and becomes never-ending. Rather than enjoy time with the kids, or taking a walk, you are always on the job. Even the most exciting work will will become stagnant and wear you down if you do it 24-7.

In the days when you couldn’t do much work away from the office you were able to step away from the stresses of work. You could free your mind, and come back with a fresh perspective on things. Sure, you might have work on the mind, but you were able to think instead of do. Often that time away from the office would fire your creative juices, and let you gain perspective on your work and the day ahead. We need that down time to allow us to stay invigorated, and passionate about our work.

A great friend of mine for whom I have the utmost respect as a business owner and all around good man, is obsessed with his work. He is also obsessed by technology that keeps him in constant touch with work. A few weeks ago I was in his car with him on the Mass Turnpike doing 70 MPH, and he was reading his emails while driving. An employee of his was in the back seat, and kept saying in a slightly frightened tone, “road… watch the road.” That’s an obsession that has become dangerous to the drivers of New England, and drivers here are already dangerous enough.

I sent an email to several people involved in a project I was working on one afternoon recently. The first one to respond, and respond within 90 seconds, was my good friend the business owner. The thing is, he was on vacation with his wife in St. Barts. My buddy should have been sipping drinks on the beach, and enjoying his time away from work. Instead, he jumped on an email immediately. The people who were actually in the office took at least 10-15 minutes to respond to my email.

My friend will tell you he needs to always be working because he has a business to run. Fair enough, but he is always late, always behind on work, and so easily distracted by emails and minor details he seems to always be in a state of panic. That is not productive, it is destructive. He’s a great person with a great wife and gorgeous children. I fear he is missing out on the fruits of his labor. What’s the point of it all if you don’t take time to enjoy life?

I have perspective on this because I used to be the same way. When I got home from work I’d go right back to it by connecting to my office computer. To me, this was what I thought I had to do to be more valuable to the company, to get ahead, to get noticed as a hard worker. It sounds cliche, but hard work doesn’t necessarily mean good work. Spending all your waking hours banging away at work will often do more harm than good. If you can’t get away from your work, you will grow to hate it. I did.

When I got to the office in the morning I was already worn out because it seemed like I never got away from work. The work I once really enjoyed became a drag. I lost my focus because I never stepped away to take an objective look at what I was doing.

When it got to the point where I felt I just wanted to quit altogether I decided I would no longer work at home. The initial attitude was to say, “forget this job, I’m not going to drive myself nuts with this anymore.” I even stopped jumping on emails the second they hit my in box. I only checked email once every two hours. After a few days I found myself enjoying work again. I found that I was getting more done.

The shocker was no one noticed I changed my habits. No client or colleague fell apart because I didn’t answer an email within 30 seconds. In fact, when particular clients were told they would be serviced from a different office most of the clients I dealt with requested that they still be allowed to deal with me. The reason was because they knew I always came through for them, and they felt the level of service they got from me was the best in the business.

This may sound like me tooting my own horn, but what I had found was a new way of getting more done in a workplace that had become cluttered with emails, phone calls, paperwork, data work, etc. It was not so much brilliance on my part, but an initial decision to give up. I was on the verge of quitting the place, so I stopped obsessing. Habit change that had been born out of frustration and stress became the best thing I could have done for myself professionally. My ability to focus, and provide real value to the business was greatly enhanced.

All of a sudden the quality of my work was even greater, and management took notice. I got a raise, and was given more responsibility over larger clients. This was the beginning of my maverick thinking mantra. I realized that to achieve greater results you often have to go against the grain.

The added benefit is a better life overall. When you can leave work at work you find your time away from the office so much more enjoyable. When you can just sit back and relax with the family, or listen your favorite tunes you just become a happier person. You can actually enjoy all the things you work for. That makes you appreciate your work even more.

Master Wealth Creation To Live A Happy Life

There is an inner urge in many of us to succeed and do well in life. For some people this may be measured by their income, their family or by material possessions in their care. How do you measure success? Your salary? The car you drive? A happy marriage? Children?

In order to have a happy and full life you need to define what is important to you, so that you can achieve it.

For the purposes of our lesson here, lets assume that you want to find happiness in your life. For you to achieve this there are most likely different roadblocks in the way. Based on the vast majority of the population, the one thing that limits happiness is wealth. Without wealth life can indeed become very difficult. There are enough pressures in life to worry about, let alone having money problems hanging over your head.

I recommend to all of my clients that they really need to focus on what is important to them individually and then establish a plan to improve their quality of life, which can lead to more happiness. There is some truth in the comment that money is the source of all evil. This can be true, in that the desire for money itself can lead to an unhappy and unfilled life. What I am on about here is that if you have the money side of things taken care of, then it can be much easier to focus on the important things in life, such as your family.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could just wake up in the morning, take the kids to school, go for a walk or exercise at the gym, catch up with friends for lunch, read a book, pick up the kids from school and then stay at home with the family in the evening. If you can manage to take out the work aspect of life, suddenly you are freed up to do the things that you love.

For me, I personally love photography. When I managed to get my finances under control, and establish online passive income streams I knew that I wouldn’t have to worry about money again. I was able to cut back on how much time I spent working, because I didn’t need the money. Now I am free to go away for long weekends or a couple of weeks here and there, on photography excursions, where I can spend time relaxing, while also capturing amazing scenery with my camera. Previously I was working 60+ hour weeks and I would never have time for myself. With the money problem out of the equation, I can focus on things that make me happy, like my family and my hobbies.

When you are able to create streams of passive income, that do the work for you, they earn you the money, you can take a step back from it all and realize that there is more to life than just doing the daily grind in the office. Some people that I have worked with to help take control of their lives, have been able to leave their job, where they weren’t happy and go back to study a course that they always wanted to. The best part is that they have been able to keep their well paying salaries, because their passive income has replaced it. In most cases even, after careful configuration, they are earning more than they were spending countless hours working.

How NLP and Metaphysics Can Improve the Emotional Wellbeing of Employees

I am sure you would agree that the most important resource of a business is not really the product or service, nor in the customers; it is actually in the employees, without whom the business would not exist. And if the employees are not well then the performance decreases, and with it the productivity.

In fact, our performance and personal productivity is strictly linked to the way we feel, to our emotional state. There are so many reasons for which we might temporarily feel stressed or anxious or depressed, reasons due to problems both at work and at home; in fact, what goes on at home is brought into work and vice versa.

Now, is there something we can do when we do not feel good that is really effective and lasting? Can we empower ourselves to take control of our emotional state? Is it possible to feel good no matter what goes on in our lives or around us? Yes, but let us consider first the approach we would normally have when we experience an emotional problem.

Perhaps the first thing we would do is try to figure out why we feel anxious or stressed or depressed in order to do something about it and solve the problem. Now, if the reason is of a practical nature, let’s say for example we need to delegate, then the problem resolves itself as we take action. But often the reason which causes us not to feel good is of a different nature and that approach does not work. Let me explain.

The way we feel depends on our thinking, on our beliefs and attitudes; it depends on our language, our self-talk, our physiology; it depends on the questions we ask ourselves; it depends on our focus; it depends on our assumptions, on the meanings we give to events, people’s behaviours, situations we experience, which determine our reactions / responses; and it depends on the way we treat ourselves, on the level of care we have for ourselves. And the majority of our thinking patterns are below the consciousness, they are stored in our subconscious mind.

Now, if we focus on the problem, let’s say we feel anxious, and we try to analyse it to find a solution and we try to understand the reasons why we feel this way, maybe even looking back to childhood, it would actually create more of a problem. And the reason is very simple, but often we not aware of it.

It is simply basic metaphysics: what we focus on increases in our neurology and we create more of it. We often are not aware of how the basic spiritual laws of the Universe really influence our life, but once we know something about them, our life becomes much easier: the pain and struggle tend to disappear to make space for wellbeing and flow.

And there is something else to say about problem solving. Let’s say for example we have a problem and we try to find a solution; do we find a solution? No, otherwise we would not have the problem now! It is just our mind that tells us that the solution is in our mind and even more, it tells us that if we do not find a solution, we need to beat ourselves up! Smart, isn’t it? Our mind tells us we need to beat ourselves up because we have not tried hard enough or maybe because we ’should be smarter’ or something similar. And so, we beat ourselves up, but we still have the problem and so we try to figure it out harder, we do not manage, so we beat ourselves up even more, and the circle goes on again and again trying to find a solution. And how do we feel? Worse!

Now, Albert Einstein said: ‘No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.

The solution is not in the same level of consciousness and it does not come from the mind. If we think we are our feelings or our minds, if we identify ourselves with our feelings or our minds, then we get stuck. We are not our feelings, we are not our minds, no matter how bright we might be, we are by far immensely more than that.

And if we let go trying to figure out long enough, we will actually allow the solution to the problem to come to our awareness. Does it make sense? Probably not!

This is a different way of thinking which, combined with NLP techniques, will bring us freedom from limiting patterns, and thus wellbeing.

NLP, in fact, is very effective to help change the thinking patterns: our thinking, our beliefs, language, self-talk, meanings, physiology, and so on. It enables us to instantly feel good and no matter what goes on in our life. And if we combine NLP with metaphysics, with the knowledge of who we truly are and our real power, than we know the secret of true wellbeing.

How NLP and Metaphysics Can Improve the Emotional Wellbeing of Employees

I am sure you would agree that the most important resource of a business is not really the product or service, nor in the customers; it is actually in the employees, without whom the business would not exist. And if the employees are not well then the performance decreases, and with it the productivity.

In fact, our performance and personal productivity is strictly linked to the way we feel, to our emotional state. There are so many reasons for which we might temporarily feel stressed or anxious or depressed, reasons due to problems both at work and at home; in fact, what goes on at home is brought into work and vice versa.

Now, is there something we can do when we do not feel good that is really effective and lasting? Can we empower ourselves to take control of our emotional state? Is it possible to feel good no matter what goes on in our lives or around us? Yes, but let us consider first the approach we would normally have when we experience an emotional problem.

Perhaps the first thing we would do is try to figure out why we feel anxious or stressed or depressed in order to do something about it and solve the problem. Now, if the reason is of a practical nature, let’s say for example we need to delegate, then the problem resolves itself as we take action. But often the reason which causes us not to feel good is of a different nature and that approach does not work. Let me explain.

The way we feel depends on our thinking, on our beliefs and attitudes; it depends on our language, our self-talk, our physiology; it depends on the questions we ask ourselves; it depends on our focus; it depends on our assumptions, on the meanings we give to events, people’s behaviours, situations we experience, which determine our reactions / responses; and it depends on the way we treat ourselves, on the level of care we have for ourselves. And the majority of our thinking patterns are below the consciousness, they are stored in our subconscious mind.

Now, if we focus on the problem, let’s say we feel anxious, and we try to analyse it to find a solution and we try to understand the reasons why we feel this way, maybe even looking back to childhood, it would actually create more of a problem. And the reason is very simple, but often we not aware of it.

It is simply basic metaphysics: what we focus on increases in our neurology and we create more of it. We often are not aware of how the basic spiritual laws of the Universe really influence our life, but once we know something about them, our life becomes much easier: the pain and struggle tend to disappear to make space for wellbeing and flow.

And there is something else to say about problem solving. Let’s say for example we have a problem and we try to find a solution; do we find a solution? No, otherwise we would not have the problem now!
