Under the moose test, a vehicle’s stability is tested during a sudden evasive maneuver, usually towards the other lane (which is to avoid a moose suddenly appearing before your vehicle’s path). The vehicles that were easier to control during the sudden lane changes rated higher in the tests.
Although the NHTSA ratings and moosetests would point to taller vehicles or those with a higher center of gravity being less resistant to a rollover accident, a lot still depends on the driver for safe motoring. In fact, the NHTSA once stated that all vehicles can rollover.
Since there is little motorists can do about the rollover ratings (since these are based on tests), what they can do is improve their skill and knowledge about vehicle control dynamics (a subject only taught in performance driving schools).
In the subject of vehicle control dynamics, a motorist is taught how to keep his vehicle balanced under all road conditions, and to avoid imbalance that could lead to loss of control or accidents (like a rollover).
To simplify matters (but we will write more on this subject later), a vehicle is balanced when its weight is equally distributed on all four wheels (when it is traveling), and there is no abrupt load transfer to the front (like during hard braking) or when the vehicle leans to one side (like what happens when a vehicle enters a turn too fast).
To keep a vehicle balanced, always observe the following:
* Travel at the appropriate speed so you can avoid the following:
Sudden lane changes (requiring quick steering inputs)
Sudden braking
* Always brake along a straight line (especially during hard braking situations)
* Brake early as possible (to avoid abrupt load transfer from the rear to the front of the vehicle)
* Always slow down and shift to the appropriate gear before entering a turn (do not step on the brakes and turn the steering wheel simultaneously)
* Be aware of road adhesion conditions (slippery and the like) and adjust speed appropriately
* Keep tires properly inflated at all times
It is also advisable to look as far as possible when driving (but not ignoring what is immediately ahead) so you can judge road conditions ahead and apply the necessary steering, braking or deceleration measure to keep your vehicle balanced.
Likewise, when a vehicle is to be loaded with lots of passengers and cargo, make sure this is well distributed over the vehicle. Do not load too much on one side, nor too much at the rear.

Receiver, Fifth Wheel, or Goosneck: Trailer Hitches Demystified

Do you want to haul a boat, an ATV trailer, a work trailer, or a camper? Obviously, you need a trailer hitch. Trailer hitches have all kinds of handy uses and are invaluable on the rear of your truck or SUV. If you have or need a trailer hitch, you probably have the most common type which is a receiver hitch, but if you have a vehicle with lots of power and a heavy load to haul, you might have a gooseneck or a fifth wheel hitch.
A receiver hitch is fabricated from metal and bolted to rear of your vehicle’s frame. What shows in the back of the car, under the rear bumper is a “hole,” usually 1-2 inches square. To haul with this hitch, a person simply has to insert and secure a ball shank. This is the square metal tube that fits into the receiver and on which the trailer ball is mounted. To hitch some thing to a receiver hitch, you simply drop the ball coupler of your trailer onto the hitch ball and secure it.
Receiver hitches come in Class I through Class IV sizes. Weight tolerances increase with the class number (so a class III hitch can haul more weight than a class I hitch). Ball sizes and shank sizes also vary according to your needs. Class II and III receiver hitches are the most common and can haul up to 3500 lbs (class II) and up to 5,000 lbs (class III).
It is important to note not only the maximum weight your hitch and ball can handle, but also your towing vehicle’s weight maximums. If you have a class III hitch (hauls up to 5,000 gross trailer weight), but your vehicle is only rated to haul 3,500 lbs; you have to stay below that 3,500 lbs. Otherwise your steering and braking won’t be enough to control a load that big, and you will be a hazard on the road.
If you need to haul more weight, and your tow vehicle can handle it, there are weight distributing hitches that work with a receiver hitch to increase safety on the road. If you need to haul a whole lot more weight, you should consider a gooseneck or 5th wheel trailer hitch. Gooseneck hitches look like a (you guessed it), gooseneck and they arch up over the rear of your truck to attach to a ball mounted on the floor of the truck bed. These hitches can often haul 30,000 lbs, so make sure your truck can handle it!
You have probably seen many Fifth Wheel hitches on the highway or around campgrounds as they are often used to haul the biggest camping trailers. Like the gooseneck, the point of attachment for the trailer and truck is in the truck bed. But, unlike the gooseneck, the fifth wheel hitch is much more than a ball, it’s a pin that slides down into a hitch raised above the bed floor of your pickup. Depending on your hitch, fifth wheels can haul 15,000 to 30,000 lbs.

The forester, like all the Subaru models, comes with the acclaimed Boxer engine that has its pistons aligned horizontally flat rather that the typical V-shape. This format has shown great torque readings with less noise. The Forester is a SUV model that doesn’t really look like the square shaped archetype of the traditional SUV.
Its design this year has made its interior more lush and roomy with lots of space and attachments for a laptop and mp3 players. The roof has been raised and the wheelbase lengthened for more space yet better handling. It has a double catalytic converter which eliminates more emission as well making it very environmentally friendly.

Internally, it’s as sound as all of the other models; just as their catch phrase goes “It’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.” Still sporting the Boxer engine and all wheel drive, the Legacy is built for styling and large cargo holding capacity. The ‘08 model has a trunk-area-concealed under-floor storage tray with grocery bag hooks to nicely match that description. Subaru is also releasing the first diesel powered turbo for the legacy; the first of its kind as a test market in Japan.
